Special Hockey Tournament

from the CBHL web site (my mom and my friend Zach's dad helped write this)

On April 19 to 21, Kettler Capitals Iceplex will host the largest Special Hockey International Tournament in history. More than 500 Special Athletes from the U.S., Canada, and Britain will compete in three days of hockey in what will be the "Special Olympics" of hockey.

Washington Capitals owner Ted Leonsis is scheduled to kick off the Opening Ceremonies. The tournament's host team is the Northern Virginia Cool Cats, a Special Hockey team based at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex. Other Special Hockey teams in the area are the Washington Ice Dogs, based in Laurel, and the Montgomery Cheetahs, based in Rockville.

Special Hockey, the renowned program for youngsters with autism, Down syndrome and other disabilities, is one of fastest-growing sports in the worldwide special development community. It is supported by Athletes Against Autism, co-founded by Washington Capitals goalie Olie Kolzig, the father of an autistic son.

Competition will begin Thursday evening, April 19. The Opening Ceremonies will be held at 12 noon, Friday, April 20. The tournament closes Saturday evening with a banquet for players and families. Spectators are welcome and fans are encouraged to cheer for all the players. It is a rare game that has everyone in the stands cheering for a goal, no matter the team.
